 VILLA ASTOR

Antiquity, Art, and Allure

Perched dramatically above the cliffs of Sorrento, overlooking the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius, Villa Astor has never been an ordinary private residence: its story reaches back to the 1st century A.D., when the site was associated with Agrippa Postumus, grandson of Emperor Augustus; Roman remains still anchor the estate to antiquity, while citrus groves, terraces, grottoes and botanical gardens descend toward the sea.

William Waldorf Astor acquired the property in 1905 and transformed it into his Sorrentine masterpiece, enlarging the estate, creating a romantic garden where a Dominican monastery once stood, and adding a Pompeiian villa adorned with classical columns and frescoes; inside, archaeological pieces, neoclassical details and richly decorated rooms evoke the world of collectors, travellers and cultivated European society at the height of the Grand Tour imagination.

Today, as celebrations unfold between gardens, sea views and candlelit terraces, Villa Astor remains one of Italy’s most extraordinary coastal residences—a place where Roman memory, aristocratic vision and Mediterranean beauty meet above the horizon.
